Is Your Business Ready for Succession?
There is another side of succession planning that can easily be overlooked.
You may be personally ready for a change, but is your business ready?
A business that depends heavily on its owner can be difficult to sell or transition to others.
The same can be true if key responsibilities haven’t been delegated, management isn’t prepared
to take on more responsibility, or important knowledge exists only in the owner’s head.
That doesn’t mean succession isn’t possible.
It means the realities of the business need to become part of the plan.
Understanding the company’s strengths and weaknesses, the capabilities of its people,
and the requirements of different succession paths can help identify what needs to change
before a transition can successfully take place.
There Will Be Trade-Offs
One of the hardest parts of succession is accepting that you may not be able to maximize
everything at the same time.
The option that produces the highest financial return may not be the option that best protects
employees. The path that allows you to leave quickly may look very different from one that
gives you the best financial rate of return.
Preserving the business exactly as it is may require different compromises than maximizing
its value to an outside buyer.
Good succession planning makes those trade-offs visible. Once you understand them, you can
make decisions deliberately rather than discovering the consequences after the process has
already begun.
That’s Being Intentional with Succession Design.
